Description: Ladies and gentlemen, Elvis has returned to the role of protagonist! Elvis Cole, that is, in the new thriller from Robert Crais, Chasing Darkness. This time Elvis is questioning his own possible accountability in working to free an accused murderer three years ago, when the man's body is found -- an apparent suicide, and holding a photo album of murder victims, including the woman who accused him when Elvis found the evidence that set him free. Despite the efforts of the LAPD to keep him from investigating the case, Elvis is compelled to discover the truth and whether or not he was an unwitting accomplice in some of the murders. A Darkness Forged in Fire A Darkness Forged in Fire
by Evans, Chris
Signed First Edition Fantasy for July!

While the jacket copy on this debut high fantasy draws comparisons to Tolkien and Brooks, I found it more in the vein of our own J.V. Jones. Like Julie, Chris combines dire deeds and graphic mayhem with a leavening of situational comedy. Konowa Swift Dragon, former commander of the Iron Elves, is forcibly retrieved from exile and asked to command a new regiment on behalf of the Calahrian Empire. To Konowa's dismay, since all of the other original Iron Elves have been banished, his regiment is filled with ordinary men, and even dwarves (human Alwyn and dwarf Yimt provide both comic relief and much of the heart in this tale). A conflicted Konowa is not in favor of the Empire's philosophy of unity through domination, including the quest to acquire a special artifact, but will do anything to restore the regiment to its former glory. Genuinely creepy monsters and a diverse assortment of humanoid races make for a notable new addition to the field.

Signed First Editions available in July, while supplies last.

The Last Oracle The Last Oracle
by Rollins, James
What if you could bioengineer the next great world prophet: scientifically produce the next Buddha, the next Muhammad, or the next Jesus? Would it mark the Second Coming or initiate a chain reaction with disastrous consequences?

A master at combining historical and religious intrigue with edge-of-your-seat adventure, "New York Times" bestselling author James Rollins brings back SIGMA Force to battle a group of rogue scientists who've unleashed a bioengineering project that could bring about the extinction of humankind.

In Washington, D.C., a homeless man dies in Commander Gray Pierce's arms, shot by an assassin's bullet. But the death leaves behind a greater mystery: a bloody coin found clutched in the dead man's hand, an ancient relic that can be traced back to the Greek Oracle of Delphi. As ruthless hunters search for the stolen artifact, Gray Pierce discovers that the coin is the key to unlocking a plot that dates back to the Cold War and threatens the very foundation of humanity.

An international think tank of scientists known as the Jasons has discovered a way to bioengineer autistic children who show savant talents--mathematical geniuses, statistical masterminds, brilliant conceptual artists--into something far greater and far more "frightening," in hopes of creating a world prophet for the new millennium, one to be manipulated to create a new era of global peace . . . a peace on their own terms.

Halfway around the world, a man wakes up in a hospital bed with no memory of who he is, knowing only that he's a prisoner in a subterranean research facility. With the help of three unusual children, he makes his escape across a mountainous and radioactive countryside, pursued by savage hunters bred in the same laboratory. But his goal is not escape, nor even survival. In order to thwart a plot to wipe out a quarter of the world's population, he must sacrifice all, even the children who rescued him.

From ancient Greek temples to glittering mausoleums, from the slums of India to the toxic ruins of Russia, two men must race against time to solve a mystery that dates back to the first famous oracle of history--the Greek Oracle of Delphi.

But one question remains: "Will the past be enough to save the future?"

Final Theory
by Alpert, Mark
Wow! I just read a most interesting book. It's called Final Theory by Mark Alpert. It was FABULOUS. If you're interested in science-based thrillers, you can't pass this one up. Do we know all about the universe we occupy and the mysteries of space and time? Most decidedly not. But there are plenty of scientists out there looking for more answers. Albert Einstein is not a character in this book but he's the great reference used as ballast to the story. It starts out with a dangerous stranger who tries to murder one of the great theoretical physicists of our time. And goes from there to a frenetic pace throughout the entire book. Other famous scientists are murdered and a history teacher is caught in the middle. Don't get the idea that this is a mild scientific mystery/thriller that will keep you bored in any way. Murders, dangerous chases, kidnappings, FBI turned bad -- you think of it, it's there. I couldn't put it down. It's a well written, edge of your seat thriller that takes you down the familiar road of using new theories for bad purposes with its own new twists. Look for it in June of 2008.--Diane Bader, Mysterious Galaxy Books (San Diego, CA)

Thomas Cook and more!

July author Thomas Cook's book gets some attention, plus other noteworthy titles... (Read More!)

Master of the Delta
by Cook, Thomas H.
In 1954 Mississippi, Jack Branch returns to his father's Delta estate, Great Oaks, to perform an act of noblesse oblige: teaching at the local high school. Conducting a class on historical evil, Jack is shocked to discover that his unassuming student Eddie is the son of the Coed Killer, a notorious local murderer. Jack feels compelled to mentor the boy, encouraging Eddie to examine his father's crime and using his own good name to open the doors that Eddie's lineage can't. But when Eddie's investigation leads him to Great Oaks and to Jack's own father, Jack finds himself questioning Eddie's motives--and his own. As the deadly consequences of Jack's actions fall inescapably into place, Thomas H. Cook masterfully reveals the darker truths that lurk in the recesses of small-town lives and in the hearts of even well-intentioned men.
